Revisiting our understanding of learning and/or educational system Day 1

Day 2

Day 3 Day 4

Learning is a process taking place in people’s minds It can be generally described as a change taking place in our cognition (=thinking, understanding) Educational system is a framework designed by people  the aim is to educate people, to produce ”tax payers”…

When you get the best grade, does it mean you have learnt best? Does it mean that you are a good learner?

When learning meets educational system… Our aim as educators and experts on pedagogy, is to design such educational systems that would create the best conditions for learning to take place The ”lecture-exam” approach is based on the earlier understanding of learning, paradigm of behaviorism

What learning processes? What mechanisms of learning? Asking questions Explaining Giving and receiving help Constructing a shared view Solving cognitive conflicts Tolerating uncertainty Being persistant (Veijola, 2008; Bluemink, Leinonen & Veijola, 2008)

To allow these processes to take place… Group-work Discussions Reflections Learning diary Open book exams…  To help educators, many pedagogical models and scripts have been developed

Progressive inquiry (Hakkarainen, Lonka, Lipponen & Raami, 1999).

Today there is more talk about SCRIPTS Basic idea is to pre-design the process of the course /event in pedagogically relevant way Give help to the participants (e.g. support questions, beginning of sentences…) Danger of over-scripting – be aware not to harm the natural inteactions

How can technology support to create good conditions for learning? Integrating technology into educational system does not only mean digitalising the learning content… It is easy to think that technology as such is ready for pedagogical use and the suitable ways of using it would be ”sold with” the technology itself

No matter what the context - good quality learning needs always effort and work from the individual! The current learning paradigm suggests that learning takes place in individuals’ minds, with the help of (technological) tools and in social interaction Järvelä, S. & Häkkinen, P. (2002).

Technology can help to guide, activate and support both individual and collaborative learning. Lähde: Teknologian mahdollisuudet ymmärtävän oppimisen tukena (2008).

Learning processes can be made visible and externalisation of the knowledge can be supported. Technology can support social interaction that can help to learn Lähde: Teknologian mahdollisuudet ymmärtävän oppimisen tukena (2008).

Technology is integrated in the Learning contexts! It does not by Itself help learning! Working with technology creates situations that may lead to learning! Lähde: Teknologian mahdollisuudet ymmärtävän oppimisen tukena (2008).

Discuss How do you learn best? What kind of course would you organise for class of 10 years old children in biology Lecture course for 100 people in chemistry at the university What is essential for good learning environment?

Reflect in your blog What kind of educational system has educated you? Has it given good possibilities for you and your peers to learn well? If you would now return to your home country and start developing your country’s educational system, what would you do and why? Please include technological tools in your plans (mobile phones, computers, calculators…etc.)
