Submission doc.: IEEE 11-13/1179r0 PAD for Soft AP Date: Authors: September 2013 HTC1

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-13/1179r0 Abstract A informative discussion of the Soft AP and what PAD can do to help improve user experience September 2013 HTC 2

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-13/1179r0 Soft AP Soft AP is short for Software enabled AP. While a Wireless Access Point is specifically made only to work as an AP, SoftAP is used to make a wireless client antenna work as both the AP and client. With backhaul (Cellular or Wired) it can tether associated STAs to use Internet There are emerging devices which can also act as Soft AP but not provide Internet tethering Camera, Lens, Memory Card, Hard drive, Printer…etc. According to the latest spec it may belong to the category of Infrastructure BSS Ambiguity: Though the definition of Infrastructure contains DS, the Infrastructure BSS seems to exclude the DS 3 September 2013 HTC

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-13/1179r0 Non-tethering Soft AP Usually operate in on-demand and temporary fashion An intermediate method for P2P services requiring the popular “WiFi/ connectivity” The number of members is very limited and the communication distance is short between members Usually serve as AP by default No Advertisement Server No Group Owner negotiation Easier for general users to understand the status of connection Manual selection of SSID is required If there are more than one known SSIDs nearby, user needs to (have the knowledge to) choose the corresponding network for specific service Need to launch an App to get services E.g. Remote shooting, picture viewing, file browsing, … This step is only viable if the correct network has been chosen May confuse user if the setting is not instinctive Currently support single band (2.4GHz) 4 September 2013 HTC

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-13/1179r0 PAD for Soft AP User simply launches an app to obtain the service Internet tethering Others (assuming P2P services, provided by AP directly) PAD function discovers and helps STA differentiate and choose the correct network to join Indicate provision of Internet connectivity Indicate upper layer support Lightweight and energy efficient method is desirable 5 September 2013 HTC

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-13/1179r0 An additional case to consider in PAD A STA may already associate with an Internet-providing AP but need some local services not provided by the BSS may need post-association discovery to verify the presence of certain service Pre-association discovery for Other APs is required Do PAD when the STA is still in association Help STA make necessary switch between different BSSs regarding required services 6HTC September 2013

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-13/1179r0 Summary Soft AP and the non-tethering Soft AP are introduced An additional PAD case to be considered 7HTC September 2013

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-13/1179r0 Appendix “3.1 Definitions Infrastructure: The infrastructure includes the distribution system medium (DSM), access point (AP), and portal entities. It is also the logical location of distribution and integration service functions of an extended service set (ESS). An infrastructure contains one or more APs and zero or more portals in addition to the distribution system (DS).” “ Extended service set (ESS): The large coverage network The DS and infrastructure BSSs allow IEEE Std to create a wireless network of arbitrary size and complexity. IEEE Std refers to this type of network as the ESS network. An ESS is the union of the infrastructure BSSs with the same SSID connected by a DS. The ESS does not include the DS.” 8HTC September 2013
