LIBRARY SERVICES Embargoes & Exemptions It is possible to request an embargo period for your digital thesis (generally no longer than 2 years) Must be approved by the faculty before final submission In some cases, a permanent embargo is possible (needs to be justified) Creative works (eg novels) can be exempted (but exegesis must be made available online). Add comment to final submission form if exemption has been approved.

LIBRARY SERVICES Solicitations from ‘Print on Demand’ publishers Recently, some commercial journal publishers have been experimenting with ‘author-side’ fees as an option for providing open access while maintaining current profit levels. New technology makes it possible to print paper-back books in minutes from digital text files.

LIBRARY SERVICES Solicitations from ‘Print on Demand’ publishers These developments have given rise to a new ‘business opportunity’ – print on demand publishing. Authors ‘gift’ their text to the publisher in exchange for a couple of free copies. The publisher then owns the work and is free to sell it to make a profit. Some eg VDM Verlag and Icfai Press have been approaching authors of PhD theses that available online.

LIBRARY SERVICES Solicitations from ‘Print on Demand’ publishers Warning: Read the small print of the contract. If the publisher owns the copyright, you will not be able to re-use your own work without their permission. At the very least, you must assert the right to retain a copy of the digital version of your thesis in QUT ePrints.
