Role Play Arriving in a new country - What do we need ? Adapting To Student Life in London

Adjustment to culture curve

What has surprised you so far ? What has been unexpected ? What has worried or excited you ? What feels familiar? Adapting To Student Life in London

Ways you can help yourself Recognise that what you feel is normal Keep in touch with friends and family - phone, text, , face book, bbm Have reminders of home around you - familiar objects, photos, whatever feels important for you Adapting To Student Life in London

London is very cosmopolitan, you can find food from most countries, shops with different ingredients. Try to make friends with other international students, they may understand what you are feeling. Make friends with home students, they can help you find out about living here. Adapting To Student Life in London

Join societies in the student union and meet others with common interests, wherever they come from. Don’t suffer in silence! There are lots of people who are ready to help you here at Imperial. Adapting To Student Life in London

Culture Shock and its effects What is it like to move to a different culture? What are the essentials of your travel bag? What will give you a sense of connection with home? Leaving home and coming to a different country can be stressful, this is normal. There is a great deal of loss-family, friends, familiar sights, people who you usually turn to for support and guidance.

Learning to adapt to differences-climate, food, language, social behaviour, which can feel exhausting. Understanding obvious physical differences as well as hidden differences, values, social norms, which is confusing. Beginning a new demanding course of study, which may be in a different language.
