‘X: A Fabulous Child’s Story’ Topic – Socialization

TASK: After listening to the lecture introducing the concept of Socialization, read the article titled ‘X: A Fabulous Child’s Story’ with your group. Your task is to discuss the article in your small group and come up with 5 critical thinking questions that will stimulate a large class discussion and analysis of this article. Make sure to use the information from class lecture and the article as part of your critical question development.

HOW TO CREATE DISCUSSION Good discussion questions are not answered by "yes" or "no." Instead they lead to higher order thinking (analysis, comparison, evaluation) about the work and the issues it raises. Good discussion questions call for more than simply recalling facts or guessing what the teacher already wants to know, but are open-ended, leading to a variety of responses.

Good discussion questions are useful to the students. Good questions can help to clarify passages or issues students may find difficult. They help students understand cultural differences that influence their reading. They invite personal responses and connections. Good discussion questions make (and challenge) connections between the text at issue and other works, and the themes and issues of the course.

Discussion Questions for “X: A Fabulous Child’s Story” 1) When the parents claimed their baby was “Baby X”, people’s responses toward the parents were not only confusion, but also included anger and hostility. a) Why do you think people responded the way they did? What does this tell you about how and when we think about others in terms of gender? b) Have you ever tried addressing a baby whose gender you were not sure of? How did it make you feel and why? 2) Thinking back to when you were growing up as a child, what were some of the things (toys, clothes, hobbies, etc.) which signified or were highly associated with your gender? How did people react if you ever stepped outside of the gender norms you were expected to follow (for example: playing with the opposite gender toys)? 3) Imagine you were “Baby X” and grew up to become a teenager. a) What are some things that would make it difficult for you to go through a typical day as “Teen X”? b) Do you think this list will get shorter or longer as you become “Adult X”? Why is this so? c) List 3 things that you would include in the Official Instruction Manual for raising “Teen X”. 4) After Baby X goes through an Xamination the psychiatrist says, “X has absolutely no identity problem! X isn’t one bit mixed up!” What does this statement seem to imply about how children are typically raised?
