1. Technologies Source: AD Strategy 2011

AD Process Flow Source: Wardell Armstrong BfG workshop Sept 2011

Biogas produced from AD comprises several gases, predominantly CH 4, CO 2, H 2 S and NH 4. Before the biogas is suitable to be exported to the pipeline, it must undergo processing and clean-up to reach an adequate standard. The clean-up and upgrading process involves three main steps: - removal of CO2 and trace contaminants - removal of H2S - drying BfG workshop Sept 2011

Bio-gas Upgrading Technologies Water-Wash (Water Scrubber) (remove CO 2 and H 2 S) Chemical-Wash (Adsorption/amine/selexol scrubber) Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA/vPSA) Cryogenic / CO 2 liquefaction Membrane Separation BfG workshop Sept 2011

The plant requires a range of specialist equipment and services BfG workshop Sept 2011

Services There are still many services where producers still face challenges: Oxygen content CV setting and monitoring Propane enrichment BfG workshop Sept 2011

Services Gas clean-up plant Propane enrichment Metering and monitoring Transport fuel Odourisation Gas grid injection BfG workshop Sept 2011

Services Plant fabrication, installation, commissioning Pipework, valves and fittings Compressors, blowers and vacuum pumps Pumps and process equipment (coolers, heat exchangers etc) Instrumentation Service and support Source: Xebec BfG workshop Sept 2011

3. Feedstock Sewage sludge Agricultural waste (animal manure and slurries) Food waste and biodegradable waste (garden) Energy crops Source: AD Strategy and Action Plan, 2011 BfG workshop Sept 2011

Home Abattoir Factory Retail Farm AD PLANT Energy Crops Animal Slurry Abattoir Waste Process Waste Catering Waste Retail Waste Sewage Slurry Kitchen Waste BfG workshop Sept 2011

Feedstock Implications Avoided waste to landfill Avoided emissions from excessive food waste – but need to collect it efficiently Energy crops are less desirable vs waste (secure food supply, environmental impact) Bio-gas can be exported to the grid, but use of digestate is dependent on feedstock, e.g. Environmental permitting regulations, PAS 110. BfG workshop Sept 2011

4. Future of biogas to grid in the UK and EU Urban Energy Centres – combining waste to energy technologies to maximise efficiency. Compressed Bio-methane (CBM) and vehicles CBM/CNG vehicles Already operating in Germany and are emerging in the UK, e.g. Veolia Econic refuse trucks in Sheffield First CBM refuelling station in Europe at transport depot in Kings Cross – Camden council and Gasrec. Coca-Cola HGVs Leeds Council Biomethane fuel station Mercedes Benz, Iveco, Volkswagen, BMC/Foten, Optare BfG workshop Sept 2011

Future of biogas to grid in the UK and EU Already 60 plants connected to the grid in Germany (and constantly increasing in Switzerland, Holland and Sweden). RHI is leading to increased uptake in the UK at all scales BfG workshop Sept 2011
