Father Junipero Serra Father Serra spent many years in Mexico preparing for his work. He replaced other padres in Alta California and began to start missions to convert Natives.

PURPOSE OF THE MISSIONS The purpose of the missions was to Christianize the Indians and spread Spanish influence in California. Father Junipero Serra was the principal founding missionary. In the everyday life of a mission resident, each had specific roles. The older women cooked, weaved and other lighter work. Younger men worked the land around the missions and cared for animals. The padres ran the missions, carried out services and taught the Indians Spanish and the Catholic religion.
