La Salle’s Background La Salle was born on November 22, 1643 in Rouen, France. He was a nobleman and a Jesuit. (Jesuit-Members of a Roman Catholic religious order that is officially called the Society of Jesus). When La Salle was younger he enjoyed science and nature. His real name is Rene- Cavelier. The expedition continued until they reached the Ohio River. When he returned to Canada he oversaw the building of Fort Frontenac (located now in Kingston, Ohio). The purpose of the expedition was to claim land for France. Because of this he is called the “Father of Tennessee Territory”.

La Salle was the first European to travel the length of the Mississippi River. He was also the first European to sail down the Mississippi River from the Great Lakes.(Great Lakes- Michigan, Erie, Ontario, Huron, Superior) France was financing the trip. The purpose of the trip was to travel to the Rio Grande to take over Spanish mines which was what King Louis XIV (14) originally wanted.

Robert De La Salle’s route started from France to the southern end of Lake Ontario. He went across Lake Erie, through the Strait of Detroit and across Lake St. Clair.  He then went across Lake Huron and reached Green Bay, WI on Lake Michigan.
