Location of the Celebration  Dia de los Muertos is celebrated in: The United States (Arizona State University, Mesa, and Chandler), Guatemala, Mexico, and Ecuador.

Why is it celebrated?  Its celebrated in honor of the dead.  When Spanish Conquistadors landed in Mexico they encountered the them practicing a ritual that mocked death, which is now known as Dia de los Muertos.

The significance of…  El pan de muertos- This is a bread made in Ecuador, made just for Dia de los Muertos.  Los barriletes- These are colorful kites flown in Guatemala on the day of the dead which have messages on them that are written to the dead.  El papel picado- These are tissue paper cut outs, made in Mexico, in the shape of skeletons.  Las Calaveras- This is a display of dressed up skulls and skeletons on a street in Mexico city, set up for the day of the dead.

Skulls and Skeletons  The skulls and skeletons used in Dia de los Muertos are not considered frightening in Mexico because they are colorfully decorated with flowers to welcome back spirits to their home.

Language and Peace  The native language spoken in Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Ecuador is not Spanish, its Portuguese.  The word paz (peace) is a good word for the Dia de los Muertos celebration because, they believe the dead are at “peace.” So paz would be a good word for Dia de los Muertos.

Immigrants  Little village in Chicago has a large immigrant Latino population  Immigrants usually moved to the same neighborhood because they wanted to be around their culture and people who are going through the same thing they are.

Definitions  Los caballos- a horse  Las casetas- booths  La feria- a fair  El paseo- a slow easy stroll or walk  Las carretas- long narrow cart used to transport ingredients such as sugar  El paseo- a slow easy stroll or walk
