Common Core Shifts Explaining things so well that students understand Getting students to explain so well that they are understood

Common Core Shifts in Reading

Common Core Shifts in Content It’s not about the task, it’s about the COMPLEXITY of the task. Balancing informational and literary text Building knowledge in the disciplines Text-based answers Writing from sources Academic Vocabulary Common Core Shifts in ELA Assessments Shift 1: Pre-K-5, Balancing Informational & Literary Texts Passages will be authentic, and will be balanced between informational and literary texts. Shift 2: 6-12, Knowledge in the Disciplines Assessments will contain knowledge- based questions about the informational text; students will not need outside knowledge to respond. Shift 3: Staircase of Complexity Passage selection will be based on text complexity that is appropriate to grade level per Common Core. Shift 4: Text- based Answers Shift 5: Writing from Sources Questions will require students to marshal evidence from the text, including from paired passages. Shift 6: Academic Vocabulary Students will be tested directly on the meaning of pivotal, common terms, the definition of which can be discerned from the text. Academic vocabulary will also be tested indirectly through general comprehension of the text.

What is Common Core?  Reading  Discussing  Writing

What is LDC? A framework for:  Reading  Discussing  Writing

Identifying Barriers  Reading  Discussing  Writing

Overcoming Obstacles Teachers NEED: Confidence in their reading and writing skills Understanding of what’s happening in English Grading support Consistent grading “Look-fors” Opportunities to collaborate Help infusing creativity

Connection to Compass Quality Observations Quality Development Increase in Teacher Effectiveness

Connection to Compass 1c: Setting Instructional Outcomes Tasks, essential questions, advanced planning 3b: Using questioning/prompts and discussion Bridging, Talk Moves, Socratic Seminars, essential questions, guided reading, summarizing with writing 3c: Engaging students in learning Student- centered instruction, teacher as facilitator 3d: Using Assessment in Instruction Daily formative assessments, checks for understanding, summative writing assessment

Job-Embedded Professional Development Teacher evaluations = tailored P.D. New knowledge is linked to what they already know how to do P.D. has actionable components where teachers interact with the task Peer interaction, collaboration, and exchange of ideas

Overcoming Obstacles Common practices drive the school’s success: Same language Same standards Common assessments Higher levels of complexity

The Role of Central Office Implementing across a School District: Plan for implementation Funding for training Involve principals/coaches Support for teachers
