The First Grade Guide to Measuring By: Erin Enix Measure It! The First Grade Guide to Measuring By: Erin Enix

What Does “Measure” Mean? Do you know what measuring means? Do you know how to measure something? When you measure you are finding out the size, amount, weight, or degree of something by using an instrument or device. When measuring something, its okay to use “Non-Standard Measurement”. Check out the video below to learn more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hlkRcTmFxY Ask students questions and wait an appropriate amount of time for their response. Use the video as a guide to help explain what “Non-Standard Measurement” is and how it works.

What Can We Measure? There are lots of things that can be measured! Some of those things include: Weight Time Temperature Speed Height Liquids

Measuring Tools Scale Stop Watch Ruler Thermometer Measuring cup Activate prior knowledge by asking the students if they know the names of any of the measuring tools.

How Do We Measure Things? There are different tools to measure different things! A scale measures weight A watch measures time and speed A thermometer measure temperature A ruler measures height A measuring cup measures liquids.

Careers and Measurement How do community helpers use measurement? A nurse uses a thermometer to measure your temperature. A mailman uses a scale to weigh letters and packages. A baker uses measuring spoons and cups to measure ingredients. A truck driver uses a speedometer to measure how fast he is driving. A carpenter uses a measuring tape to measure boards before cutting. Use this slide to talk to the students about how measurement is used in real world experiences. You will use measurement in your job!

Measurement and Fitness Can you measure your heart rate? Press two fingers under your jaw. Count the beats you feel to yourself. Jog in place and measure your heartbeat again. What happened? You just measured your own heart rate! Use this slide to show students how measurement connects to physical fitness. Allow the students to measure their own heart rates then share with a classmate.

Measurement Song For a unit plan the students could learn this measurement song through the week. Sing the song to transition students from one subject to another.

Lets Practice! What tools would you use to measure these items? What would you use to measure the temperature? What would you use to measure how fast you can run? What would you use to measure how much water is in the bucket? What would you use to measure how much the elephant weighs? What would you use to measure how tall you are? Give the students enough time to figure out the answers before revealing the correct answers on the next slide.

Answers! A Measuring Cup A ruler A scale Thermometer Stop Watch

Measurement Assignment Time to practice on your own. Use the website to practice your measuring skills. http://www.mathnook.com/math/skill/measurementgames.php Begin the “You do” independent portion of the lesson. Have the students work through different measurement activities. Allow the students to go online and play the measurement games from online link. Ms. Erin uses a measuring tape to measure her height.
