Levels

History of Petroleum Program Diploma Course 1980-1993 “Petroleum Exploration and Production” Separate English-language course for non-Norwegian students More than 200 persons completed the course M.Sc. Programs 1993-current “Petroleum Engineering” & “Petroleum Geoscience” English-language programs where non-Norwegian students are integrated with Norwegian students So far, more than 600 non-Norwegians have have enrolled (and more than 1000 Norwegians)

International M.Sc. and Ph.D. Programs English Language Instruction 40% non-Norwegian Students in M.Sc. Program 50% non-Norwegians in Ph.D. Program

#1 The M.Sc. programs in Petroleum Engineering and Petroleum Geoscience at NTNU ranked as # 1 in Norway by an evaluation committee appointed by NORAD May 2000 #1

Profile of the M.Sc. program at NTNU 30 professors involved 50-60 Ph.D. students available as teaching assistants An international class of 80-90 M.Sc. students per year Research-based program Advanced laboratories No. 1 on research quality (NFR evaluation 2004) Multidisciplinary environment Close collaboration with Norwegian oil and gas industry

Modern Facilities High Performance Visualization and Computing Huge amounts of data and demanding computational tasks are typical for many of the petroleum disciplines. Through a close collaboration with Norsk Hydro, the department has been able to install a floor-to-ceiling Virtual Reality laboratory, with a dedicated 32-processor SGI computer. The laboratory is used primarily for visualization of seismic data and reservoir fluid flow. Other applications are under development. We have close collaboration with other departments at NTNU, such as medicine and computer science.

Industry-Sponsored Field Courses Integrated in M.Sc. Program Geological Field Courses Through close collaboration with Statoil, Norsk Hydro, BP, and Shell several new field courses for the M.Sc. students have been developed over the past few years. The courses take place at Svalbard, in England, in the Pyrenees and in Oman. Pyrex Svalex Petrox Omanex

Multi-Disciplinary Groups Group-based multidisciplinary learning processes Considerable resources are invested in modern learning methods and technology over the past few years (PBL, multi-disciplinary groups, web-based learning). Through close collaboration with Norwegian oil companies, in particular with Statoil, large amounts of field data and realistic field problems have become freely available for education and research. In addition resources for investment in modern equipment and facilities for the development of inspiring and effective learning environments have been made available. Gullfaks-PBL e-learning in petroleum Svalex

Research collaboration with industry Long-term collaboration agreement with Norsk Hydro Long-term collaboration agreement with Statoil Long-term collaboration agreement with Shell Long-term collaboration agreement with TOTAL Long-term collaboration agreement with Enterprise Oil (Shell) (Long-term collaboration agreement with BP) Individual project agreements with most oil companies

Challenges of establishing petroleum programs in the South Infrastructure Advanced laboratories need to be established Professors Faculty members need to be developed Research activities Education at M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels need to be based on active research programs Industrial relationships Engineering programs need to have an industrial relationship International exposure An international perspective should be implemented

The requirements of establishing petroleum programs in the South Faculty members The development of faculty members and research activities in the South include education of Ph.D.’s and active research collaboration in order to qualify as faculty members. Infrastructure Basic infrastructure can be purchased for money. Advance research infrastructure needs to be developed in parallel with the development of research activities. Industrial relationship Norway is unique in terms of collaboration between academia and industry. To develop such relationships require time and patience.

The requirements of establishing petroleum programs in the South – cont’d International exposure Norway actively promotes sending students at higher levels abroad for one semester or two for broadening of perspective and exposure to culture and research. This should be equally important for students in the South. Time perspective and costs In short terms, costs will increase; in long terms, 10 years ++, costs will probably decrease

Current activities at NTNU aimed at development of petroleum programs in the South Sandwich programs NTNU is in discussions with several institutions in the South for planning possible sandwich programs. Currently, we are in a screening fase to select 2 or 3 institution for development of a closer relationship: -U Augustinho Neto-Angola -Bangladesh U of Engineering and Technology (BUET) -Indian School of Mines -Maharashtra Inst. of Techn. -Inst. Of Techn.U of Indonesia -Kathmandu U -U of BeninU of Uyo -South Afr. Petr.Studies -U of Dar es Salam -Makerere U -Hanoi U of Mining and Geology -HoChiMinh City U of Tech.
