Determining the distance between countries of latin america and the caribbean regarding their fulfillment of the sdgs in 2017 Andrés E. Arguedas-Leiva School of Statistics, University of Costa Rica

Context Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) What are they? Why are they important? “Leave no one behind” Situation of SDGs in Latin America and the Caribbean Importance of measuring progress of the SDGs

3. Calculating distance between countries based on indicators Methods and data 4. Applying multidimensional scaling (MDS) to better visualize the distances 3. Calculating distance between countries based on indicators 2. Selection of countries that had data for all indicators (no missing values) 1. Selection of indicators from World Bank and UN to measure progress of SDGs and statistical capacity for a country

Results

Conclusions / Recommendations Interpretable variables that maintain distance and relations between countries Results appropriate for decision making. Easy to determine which countries are in similar situations and which ones are being “left behind” Can include new variables or years in analysis and end up with similar results
