CAPITALISM Ideology - USA An ideology is a set of beliefs or ideas about something – such as political systems, religions etc. The ideology of the USA is CAPITALISM

Features of Capitalism in the USA Most of the businesses are owned by private companies and not by the government businesses are set up in order to make a profit – the profit motive

There will be lots of businesses competing with each other for customers The consumer will have lots of choice

The Market System The price of goods will be decided by supply and demand – the market system For example, Hampden Park would be a sellout for a cup final between…

How many tickets would sell if the final involved…

Non-intervention The government in a capitalist state like the USA will not interfere as much in the running of the economy as in, for example a communist country or a dictatorship

Features of capitalism - summary 1. Privately Owned Business. Most of the businesses, shops, farms and services in the country are be owned by private companies and not by the government e.g. Coca-Cola, McDonalds, and Nike etc. 2. The Profit Motive. People set up businesses so they can make a profit (this is sometimes called the ‘profit motive”) 3. Competition and Choice. There will be lots of different businesses competing against one another for people’s custom so the consumer will have lots of choices of goods and services 4. Market System. The price of things is decided by the market system and supply and demand - i.e. how many goods are for sale and how many people want them. 5. Non Intervention. The government in a capitalist country will not interfere too much in the running of the economy, leaving this up to private business (sometimes called private enterprise)
