Integrating Educational Technology into the Classroom Chapter 1 Integrating Educational Technology into the Classroom

Chapter 1 Learning Objectives Understand computer, information and integration literacy. Define a computing device and its components. Understand the information processing cycle. Define digital media. Define a digital student. Understand what makes a computer a powerful tool.

Chapter 1 Learning Objectives Define computer software. Explain the difference between the two types of computer software and give examples. Define what a computer network is. Explain why networks are important in schools. Explain what the Internet is and how it is used. Provide some basic uses for computer technology in education.

The Three Literacy's; Computer, Information and Integration Computer literacy. A basic knowledge of computers and their uses Information literacy. Knowing how to find, analyze and use information Integration literacy The ability to use computers and other technologies combined with a variety of teaching and learning strategies to enhance students’ learning of required basic skills.

What is a Computing Device? Electronic device operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory that; Accepts data (input) – unprocessed facts, figures, imaged and sound. Processes data into information (output). Process - the activity of organizing data into information. Information - data that is organized, has meaning, and is useful Stores the data for future use.

The Information Processing Cycle Input data Process data Output information Store data

What is a Digital Media? Technologies that allow users to create new forms of interaction, expression, communication, and entertainment in a digital format.

What is a Digital Student? Hypercommunicators who use multiple tools to communicate Students who do several things at once with ease. Goal oriented as they pursue multiple goals at the same time. Can this be said for all students?

What Makes a Computer a Powerful Tool? Speed Reliability and consistency Accuracy Storage Communications

Computer Software A series of instructions that tells the hardware of a computer what to, usually called a computer program or simply a program. Two main categories of software System - programs that control the operations of a computer Applications - programs designed to perform a specific task for a user

What is a Computer Network? A network is a collection of computers and devices connected together via communications media Networks require a communication device to connect computers and various devices together to send and receive data, instructions, and information Networks communications occurs over cables, telephone lines, cellular radio networks, satellites, and other transmission media

What is the Internet? The Internet is a worldwide collection of networks that connects millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals Uses of the Internet Communications Information Access Downloading music and video Shopping Entertainment Education
