What should I know, Mrs. Cooke? Unit 1 Test Review What should I know, Mrs. Cooke?

THE ELEMENTS This section has 20 of the elements you are supposed to have memorized. It is just like the elements quizzes…you give the symbol if the name is given and the name if the symbol is given.

Practice You have 5 minutes to practice with either a partner (a good time to introduce yourself to your new neighbors) or by yourself. Time starts now!

N Rn Fe Pb Cl Si F P Hg Sc Xe K Ga He Cd Se Sn Ge Kr Ca V C Cs Mg Sb Ba Y Au Na W H Ti O Ni Al Mo Be Br Li As Rb Zn Pt B I Mn Ag Cu Ar Co Ne Sr Bi U S

QUANITITATIVE VS. QUALITATIVE What is quantitative? What is qualitative? Practice begins in three…two…one.

Is this statement quantitative or qualitative? In hockey, there are 12 players on the ice (not counting penalties).

Quantitative or qualitative? The ice hockey puck is a solid, black disk.

Quantitative or qualitative? A standard ice hockey puck is 2.5 cm thick, 7.6 cm in diameter, and weighs between 156 and 170 g.

Qualitative or quantitative? In the NHL, there are four on ice officials; two referees and two linesmen.

Qualitative or quantitative? “Biscuit” is the common slang term for the ice hockey puck.

LABORATORY EQUIPMENT You will want to know the names of the equipment from pages 7 and 8 in your lab book.

SIGNIFICANT FIGURES Know the rules in order to identify the correct number of significant figures.

How many sig figs? 3,330 miles

How many sig figs? 354 people

How many sig figs? 3.52 mL

How many sig figs? 7.34 x 1025 atoms of gold

How many sig figs? 0.00230 ms

How many sig figs? 5050 mL

How many sig figs? 43,102.0 m

How many sig figs? 5 cars

How many sig figs? 80.0010 cm

How many sig figs? 21.0 0C

How many sig figs? 175 graded papers

MEASURING When measuring, always estimate one digit past the marks.

What is this measurement?

GRAPHING Know how to identify independent and dependent variables. Know if a variable is qualitative or quantitative. Know what a controlled experiment is. Know all the parts of the graph and how to make a graph.

Here’s a scenario: Al wonders if adding salt to water will affect how long it takes the water to freeze. Al thinks that salt water will freeze more quickly than fresh water. He decides to check his hypothesis by conducting an experiment. Al takes two ice trays and fills one with distilled water and the other with distilled water that has two tablespoons of salt added. He makes sure he puts exactly the same amount of water in each ice tray. Al takes the trays and puts them side by side in the freezer. Al checks the ice trays every 10 minutes to see if the water in each tray has begun to freeze. Al finds that after 20 minutes the water in the ice tray without the salt has started to form ice, while the ice tray with the salt water is still completely liquid.

What is the independent variable?

Is this independent variable qualitative or quantitative?

What is the dependent variable?

Is the dependent variable quantitative or qualitative?

Name two things that made this a controlled experiment.

Name the six main parts of a graph.

Measuring part 2 If i wanted to measure a small amount of liquid for a lab, what piece of lab equipment would i use? What units would i use to measure this?

Scientific notation 82,851 -----> 82,851 -----> 8.19 x 10-7 -------> 0.000000819 8.29 x 104

That’s it. Study wisely.
