Purpose of Our Time Together Gain understanding of the State of Michigan required assessment structure. Learn how to read and understand the Student Score Report. Empower parents/guardians with tools and resources to support student’s assessment preparation. Explain that these are the targets for the presentation

Vocabulary The College Board - The organization that prepares and administers standardized tests that are used in college admission. SAT- ”Scholastic Assessment Test,” which measures academic skills. Required in Michigan as the state assessment in grade 11. PSAT – ”Pre-SAT,” which is taken in Michigan in grades 8, 9 and 10 fall and spring. PSAT/NMSQT - ”Pre-SAT,” which is taken in grade 11 and used for National Merit recognition. KHAN Academy – Personalized, official online SAT prep. Share this vocabulary with parents so they will know what you are talking about

Michigan Assessment Requirements Grade 8 M-STEP* (Spring) Grade 9 PSAT 8/9 (Spring) Grade 10 PSAT 10 (Spring) Grade 11 SAT and M-STEP Science & Social Studies (Spring) Explain that currently Michigan testing requirements at grades 9/10/11 are 8th grade currently utilizes M-STEP but beginning in 2017-2018 they will use PSAT 8/9 w/ an M-Step wrap-around component for Social Studies and Science 9th Grade 10th Grade 11th Grade Be sure to add any other assessments that your school is using. Explain that todays presentation is on PSAT/SAT because that is the College Entrance exam and what is likely to be the State of Michigan's long term plan. * Beginning in 2018-2019 Michigan will replace the M-STEP with PSAT 8/9 as the grade 8 assessment in ELA and Math.

Take a Deep Breath

Arrows: Total Test Score Percentile Ranking- means the percentage of students they scored higher than. Math Score & EBRW score Indicates if they are on track for college readiness. Green range on track. Red Range not on track. Test Scores- shows how many questions were correct out of how many asked in the specific subject Cross Test Scores- How well they were able to use the content of History/Social Studies and Science within the tested questions. EX A reading passage contained science content The scores are further broken down by the most important skills in each subject area

The second page of the student report further explain What the student can likely already do Suggestions on how to improve skills

Page 3 of the Report How you answered each question Key Access Code will give access to further information about the content of the question

So, what do we do with these scores?

Practice Options – Daily App Download the Daily Practice App and get one question each day. Available in the App Store, Google Play or via the web! You can download an APP that will give you one question a day to practice for the SAT Show Video collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/practice/daily-practice-app

Practice Options – Full Length Tests 8 tests available, which can be scored immediately using the daily app. Explain that there are 8 practice tests available. Students should take the Paper/Pencil version in a simulated testing environment Getting a feel for the timing is important Provide information about how your school is or will use the practice tests collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/practice/full-length-practice-tests

Explain to parents that KHAN academy is a web based educational site that includes many academic resources for students. They have partnered with College Board to create a SAT interactive practice program. Tell parents your school plan to use KHAN Inform Parents that you have provided a hand out with step by step information on how to use and monitor KHAN

Creating Your Account - Parents 1. Parents can create an account in Khan and monitor student progress 2. This information is available in a handout.

So, why are scores important for college? Colleges look at SAT scores as part of the admissions process. Different universities have varying requirements for acceptance. Scores can also be used to determine both university and local scholarships

College Search – Big Future Big Future by College Board – part of student portal Search and filter colleges based on distance, SAT scores, housing, etc. College Board makes searching for colleges easy with Big Future. Students can search schools, learn about entrance standards based on their SAT scores, and other important information. They can even add colleges to their saved list and find out if they are on track based on their scores.

College Information – Requirements Worksheet The Michigan Colleges entrance worksheet indicates what the average entrance requirements are for Michigan Colleges. Each year the requirements will change slightly based on the incoming freshman class application volume. If a college is getting applications with lower scores they may make an adjustment in their entrance criteria. In other words, the more applicants the higher the academic requirements. This worksheet is in the parent handout package
