A, Two weeks after institution of interferon therapy, showing diffuse slowing (in the range of 2 to 5 Hz) with widespread quasiperiodic sharp waves occurring bilaterally over left and right hemispheres. B, Later segment from same recording after patient had received 4 mg of diazepam (Valium) intravenously; frequency of sharp waves decreased, but clinical status of patient remained unchanged. Generalized slowing of activity persisted. The faster frequencies are caused by effects of diazepam.
