Electroencephalographic Abnormalities in Interferon Encephalopathy: A Preliminary Report  CARY C. SUTER, M.D.  Mayo Clinic Proceedings  Volume 59, Issue 11, Pages 847-850 (November 1984) DOI: 10.1016/S0025-6196(12)65620-1 Copyright © 1984 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research Terms and Conditions

Fig. 1 (case 1). Electroencephalographic tracings. A, Two weeks after institution of interferon therapy, showing diffuse slowing (in the range of 2 to 5 Hz) with widespread quasiperiodic sharp waves occurring bilaterally over left and right hemispheres. B, Later segment from same recording after patient had received 4 mg of diazepam (Valium) intravenously; frequency of sharp waves decreased, but clinical status of patient remained unchanged. Generalized slowing of activity persisted. The faster frequencies are caused by effects of diazepam. C, Two weeks after cessation of interferon therapy, showing reduction in sharp waves and decrease in slow-wave abnormalities, although some diffuse slowing of background activity is still present. Fig. 2 (case 2). Electroencephalogram obtained after administration of two doses of interferon. Note generalized slowing of background activity and intermittent, high-voltage, rhythmic delta activity (middle part of tracing). Fig. 3 (case 3). Electroencephalogram obtained after 3 weeks of interferon therapy, showing slowing of background activity and superimposed, intermittent, rhythmic delta slow-wave bursts.
