Forgive us our Debts Matthew 6:12 May 19, 2019

Debts, Trespasses, Sins Forgive us our what?

Luke 11:4 (ESV) and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

Forgiveness God’s provision

Why ask once saved? The Lord told us to. We need it. Unconfessed & unrepented sin impedes fellowship (cf. Psalm 51, Ephesians 4:30) and results in discipline.

Hebrews 12:3–6 (ESV) Consider Him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by Him. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives.”

Hebrews 12:7–11 (ESV) It is for discipline that you have to endure Hebrews 12:7–11 (ESV) It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

1 John 1:8–10 (ESV) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Getting the gospel right

Ephesians 2:8–10 (ESV) For by grace you have been saved through faith Ephesians 2:8–10 (ESV) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
