Traditions Viewed through the eyes of Progressives

Traditions Viewed through the eyes of Progressives Progressive: happening or developing gradually or in stages; proceeding step by step. Traditions Viewed through the eyes of Progressives

Hold Fast Traditions from God…(2 Thess. 2:15) Inspired Word of God delivered to man through apostles… Can Hear, Read, teach, interpret and apply accurately that delivered from God to man (2 Tim. 2:2, I Cor. 11:2, 2 Thess. 3:6-15)

Hold Fast Traditions from God…(2 Thess. 2:15) Inspired Word of God delivered to man through apostles Can Hear, Read, teach, interpret and apply accurately that delivered from God to man (2 Tim. 2:2, I Cor. 11:2, 2 Thess. 3: 6-15) Progressive view: “It is healthy to keep all traditions under evaluation, because the fact is, circumstances change and culture changes, so as to render a particular tradition unnecessary or ineffective. In this case, it is time to change them.”

3: 6-15) Progressive view: “And there is a danger involved in traditions, and that is that we can equate our interpretation of Scripture with Scripture itself…as if I know all truth, and I make infallible interpretations, at least in selective matters. But that displays pride, arrogance and ignorance, I might add.”

3: 6-15) Progressive view: “They were not making that distinction that Jesus says it needs to be made, distinction between God’s written word and all human applications and interpretations. What we have to understand is that God’s word is absolute, but our understanding and interpretations are always relative.”

3:6-15) Progressive view: “They were taking their inherited but human precepts that had been passed down and they were treating them as if they were doctrines or instructions from God. They put the traditions on par with the Scriptures….don’t elevate your traditions to the status of Scripture…Scripture is an obligation; tradition is an option.”

Is the phrase accurate or need changing? “Honor your father and mother”- take care of them; do not curse them, requite them (Ex. 20:12, 21:17, I Tim. 5:4)

Is the phrase accurate or need changing? “Honor your father and mother”- take care of them; do not curse them, requite them (Ex. 20:12, 21:17, I Tim. 5:4) The one step of salvation? – “faith only”? The two ways to establish Bible authority? – Command and Example?

Is the phrase accurate or need changing? “Honor your father and mother”- take care of them; do not curse them, requite them (Ex. 20:12, 21:17, I Tim. 5:4) The one step of salvation? – “faith only”? The two ways to establish Bible authority? – Command and Example? Progressive view: “…and we admit that we in churches of Christ as we are familiar with them, have our traditions; the phrase, for example, the five steps of salvation, or the three ways to establish Bible authority, or having an invitation song and the end of a sermon by which we stand and sing and others like them. These are also traditions.

Progressive view: “ours are not written down in so many words, but they exist and play some part in what we say and do. And so, we need to constantly have our traditions under evaluation, and the Pharisees needed to do that, too.”

Is “social drinking” sin? “For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.” (I Pet. 4:3) “ an individual tradition” – (I Tim. 5:23, I Tim. 3:8) Progressive view: “…I have to conclude that Scripture does not forbid all use of alcohol. So, if that makes do not drink at all or do not touch a human application, or to put it in terms of our lesson tonight, it makes it a tradition.

3:8) Progressive view: “…Now, I will add that that’s not (all) you have to consider about the subject… loosing inhibition and clouding your judgment… horrible effects that the abuse of alcohol has had on people and on families… must consider his or her influence on others. These things also have to be considered.

3:8) Progressive view: “…I have revealed my conclusion, but I have to understand my conclusion is my conclusion. I have to understand it for what it is, and I can’t equate it with the teaching of Scripture, and I must recognize that I am not at liberty to impose my conclusion on others and to judge people by my conclusions.”

Progressivism (2 Thess. 2:15, I Cor. 11:2, 2 Tim. 2:2, I Cor. 4:17) Can’t equate interpretations with Scripture Humble spirit – not arrogant, not ignorant (2 Thess. 2:15, I Cor. 11:2, 2 Tim. 2:2, I Cor. 4:17)

Progressivism (2 Thess. 2:15, I Cor. 11:2, 2 Tim. 2:2, I Cor. 4:17) Can’t equate interpretations with Scripture Just take a step… today the “Phrase” is a tradition that can change… tomorrow they may be ready to change how we establish Scriptural authority Humble spirit – not arrogant, not ignorant (2 Thess. 2:15, I Cor. 11:2, 2 Tim. 2:2, I Cor. 4:17)

Progressivism (2 Thess. 2:15, I Cor. 11:2, 2 Tim. 2:2, I Cor. 4:17) Can’t equate interpretations with Scripture Just take a step… make drinking alcohol an individual matter, not a church matter... Humble spirit – not arrogant, not ignorant (2 Thess. 2:15, I Cor. 11:2, 2 Tim. 2:2, I Cor. 4:17)
