July 2019 Introduction 11be should support the backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE 802.11 devices. Legacy devices have their own auto-detection method. 11n/11ac : auto-detection based on constellation mapping. 11ax : auto-detection based on repetition checking. To keep coexistence with the legacy device, we should consider the auto-detection method for 11be, and it also relates to the design of preamble for 11be. So, in this contribution, we discuss some considerations on 11be auto-detection and the preamble design for the 11be PPDU. Dongguk Lim, LG Electronics

Considerations for EHT auto-detection July 2019 Considerations for EHT auto-detection As described in PAR[1], EHT PPDU(s) should not affect to legacy IEEE 802 devices (i.e., 11a, 11n, 11ac, and 11ax) For coexistence with legacy devices, L-Preamble should be included in 11be PPDUs. In addition, RL-SIG may be included in the 11be PPDU for an extended range of EHT transmission as used in 11ax PPDUs. EHT packets should be differentiated from legacy packets(ex., 11n/11ac/11ax) as early as possible. There is no choice using the BSPK/QBPSK combinations because most of them are used for legacy packets currently. So, similar auto-detection method with 11ax or new auto-detection method can be considered for classification of 11be PPDU(s). In the next slides, we introduced the some candidate methods for EHT auto-detection. Dongguk Lim, LG Electronics

Auto-detection methods for 11be (2/2) July 2019 Auto-detection methods for 11be (2/2) Option 1: reusing of RL-SIG Similar to 11ax, RL-SIG is used for packet classification but RL-SIG can be configured to have different values/patterns using the following various methods. Leveraging the L-Length field To distinguish the 11ax and 11be, L-SIG length field may need to set to a different value from defined in 11ax. by setting it to a value that has a zero remainder when dividing by 3. Using the different pattern of RL-SIG By using the polarization or predefined bits or signature sequences. Other methods may be considered and open to this. It is possible to quickly distinguish between PPDU types since classification can be performed after L-SIG. By using the different value/pattern of RL-SIG, it is possible to distinguish between 11be and 11ax. To distinguish from 11n or 11ac, RL-SIG and next symbol should be modulated with BPSK. Dongguk Lim, LG Electronics

Auto-detection methods for 11be (1/2) July 2019 Auto-detection methods for 11be (1/2) Option 2 : using PHY identifier for indication of 11be PPDU For early classification of 11be PPDU, this identifier can be conveyed using the OFDM symbol(s) places right after L-SIG/RL-SIG in EHT PPDU. The PHY identifier for classification of 11be PPDU can consist of either some bits for indication or signature sequences. It is capable to be applied to the next generation of Wi-Fi standard after 11be. differentiate between 11be and future version by using the different value or different sequence. Dongguk Lim, LG Electronics

July 2019 Summary For the coexistence with legacy devices, 11be PPDUs should have a legacy preamble (i.e., L-STF, L-LTF, and L-SIG). For the range extension, RL-SIG can be used in 11be PPDUs. For the classification of 11be, we can consider the following methods as an 11be auto-detection. Using PHY identifier Using RL-SIG Dongguk Lim, LG Electronics

July 2019 Straw poll 1 Do you agree that 11be PPDU should include the legacy preamble for support coexistence with legacy PPDUs(i.e., 11n,11ac,11ax) ? Dongguk Lim, LG Electronics

July 2019 Straw poll 2 Do you agree that for the range extension, RL-SIG is used in 11be PPDU? Dongguk Lim, LG Electronics
