It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE 802.11. Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures <http:// ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair <stuart.kerry@philips.com> as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at <patcom@ieee.org>. Feng Li et al Feng Li, ZTE Corporation

July 2005 July 2005 January 2006 Abstract This document contains some simulation results by comparing current 11a implementation and the one using Adaptive Rate Control (doc#: 11-06/1286r1). Feng Li et al Feng Li, ZTE Corporation

July 2005 July 2005 January 2006 Simulation Setups 10 workstations associated with a single AP without any hidden stations Fixed frame size of 1000 bytes AP runs using 802.11a DCF The coverage is determined by transmitting 1000 bytes of frame at 6Mbps with frame error rate of 10% The BER is based on large scale fading and small scale fading (Rayleigh distribution). The BER is then translated to FER above Feng Li et al Feng Li, ZTE Corporation

January 2006 Capability Exchanges Exchange Adaptive Rate Control capability of a STA during (re)association process Use Wireless Network Management Capability IE doc#: 05/1070r2 (Qi et al) or 05/1076r0 (Black et al) Proposed wireless network management capabilities field: B0 B1 B15 Adaptive Rate Control Reserved Bits: 1 12 Adaptive Rate Control bit will be set to 1 if STA supports and want to enable this feature Feng Li et al

Procedure of ARC Capability Exchange January 2006 Procedure of ARC Capability Exchange Feng Li et al

Frame Exchange Sequence July 2005 July 2005 January 2006 Frame Exchange Sequence Only the transmitting STA and the receiving STA that support Adaptive Rate Control shall have the frame exchange sequence enabled for Adaptive Rate Control. On receipt of a frame the STA shall include the feedback rate in the immediate response frame addressed to the sender. On receipt feedback rate in an immediate response frame, the sender shall transmit subsequent frames within a TXOP at the feedback rate. Feng Li et al Feng Li, ZTE Corporation

January 2006 Example of Adaptive Rate Control Based on Single Data Frame Transmission Sender sends RTS (Rate_ID1) to Receiver, and Receiver performs forward channel quality evaluation (Rate_ID2) Receiver sends CTS (Rate_ID1) to Sender together with feedback rate (Rate_ID2) information Sender transmits data (Rate_ID2) to Receiver Feng Li et al

Proposed Feedback Rate Identifiers July 2005 July 2005 January 2006 Proposed Feedback Rate Identifiers B7 B8 B9 B10 Rate Identifier (Mbps) No Recom. 1 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54 4 (3) bits of Service field in PLCP header are used to specify feedback rate 802.11a: Bit b7, b8, b9 and b10 802.11b: Bitb1, b4 and b5 802.11g: Bit b0, b1 and b4 Feedback Rate identifiers for 802.11a, for example: Feng Li et al Feng Li, ZTE Corporation
