LEED Overview

LEED Overview What is LEED What does LEED measure Type of LEED projects Our products vs LEED LEED rating system Where commitments still matter.

What is LEED LEED definition Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system,  providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

What is LEED USGBC / CaGBC Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

Types of LEED projects Graphics

Types of LEED projects Reminder A project can be LEED certified. A product can’t be LEED certified. But a product can contribute to achieve LEED certification for a project.

Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (EB O&M) Types of LEED projects Definitions New Construction (NC) LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations is designed to guide and distinguish high-performance commercial and institutional projects. Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (EB O&M) LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance provides a benchmark for building owners and operators to measure operations, improvements and maintenance. Commercial Interiors (CI) LEED for Commercial Interiors is a benchmark for the tenant improvement market that gives the power to make sustainable choices to tenants and designers.

Types of LEED projects Definitions Core & Shell LEED for Core & Shell aids designers, builders, developers and new building owners in implementing sustainable design for new core and shell construction. Schools LEED for Schools recognizes the unique nature of the design and construction of K-12 schools and addresses the specific needs of school spaces. Retail LEED for Retail recognizes the unique nature of retail design and construction projects and addresses the specific needs of retail spaces.

Types of LEED projects Definitions Healthcare (GGHC) LEED for Healthcare promotes sustainable planning, design and construction for high-performance healthcare facilities. Homes LEED for Homes promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes. Neighborhood Development LEED for Neighborhood Development integrates the principles of smart growth, urbanism and green building into the first national program for neighborhood design.

Types of LEED projects Types of projects where AB is implicated New construction (NC) Commercial interior (CI) Schools Healthcare (working with GGHC) Existing building: Operation and maintenance (EB O&M)

Types of LEED projects Possible points for LEED NC

Types of LEED projects Certification level for LEED NC For a New Construction (NC) Project, under USGBC: LEED certified: 40 points Silver: 50 points Gold: 60 points Platinum: 80 points

Types of LEED projects LEED certification Why have a LEED certification ? A rapidly-growing number of private sector organizations and governments are adopting LEED certification in their policies, programming and operations, with the goal of achieving and demonstrating sustainability. Also, a LEED certification may have a payback only by the cost saving in energy for a project when you achieve the certification.

Our products vs LEED How can we contribute for LEED projects ? Amtico/Estrie products can contribute to have points to eventually achieve a LEED certification for a project. The points we can contribute are under these credits: Materials and Resources: recycled content (MR 4) Materials and Resources: regional materials (MR 5) Materials and Resources: rapidly renewable materials (MR 6) Indoor Environmental Quality: low-emitting material; Adhesives & Sealants (IEQ 4.1) Indoor Environmental Quality: low-emitting material; Flooring systems (IEQ 4.3)

Our products vs LEED Details for materials and resources (MR) credit

Our products vs LEED Recycled content: preconsumer vs postconsumer Postconsumer, example: scrap from tires Preconsumer, extended definition: Preconsumer material is defined as material diverted from the waste stream during the manufacturing process. Reutilization of materials (i.e.: rework, regrind or scrap generated in a process and capable of being reclaimed within the same process that generated it) is excluded.

LEED rating system Example For example, for the recycled content, the calculation is made on the sum of the cost for all materials:

LEED rating system Facts There is no point allowed for a product. It is allowed to the project; A product is contributing to the project by having credits (pts) and eventually become LEED certified; This works credit MR 4 (recycled content) also for credit MR 5 (regional materials) and for credit MR6 (rapidly renewable materials); For the project, FloorScore can help be qualifiying the floorcovering ; all the surface of the project has to be certified Floorscore or an equivalent certification to get the point for the credit IEQ 4.3 ; For the project, the adhesive which is SCAQMD #1168 compliant helps also ; every adhesive of the project has to complies to get the point for the credit IEQ 4.1
