What is a sound wave? Mechanical wave – longitudinal *A vibration *Particles of medium are disturbed *Causes a wave causes Most common medium is air Can.
1.Sound must have a medium through which to travel. Through which medium – solid, liquid, or gas – does sound travel faster? 2.How are different musical.
Chapter 15.2 – Characteristics of Waves amplitude – the maximum distance that the particles of a wave’s medium vibrate from their rest position -in a transverse.

Making Sound a longitudinal wave produced when matter vibrates – this in turn, causes the medium in which it is in to vibrate ex: tuning fork (the matter)
Physics of Sound WAVES. Sound is a wave. It is a wave of energy that moves through matter; solids, liquids, gases.
Sources of Sound  sound is a mechanical wave produced by vibrations that occur in a medium-- generally air  sound is a longitudinal wave.
SOUND WAVES & BEAT FREQUENCY. SOUND WAVES Sound waves are caused by vibrations Vibrations cause contraction and expansion of an object, which creates.
SOUND. Georgia Performance Standards S4P2: Students will demonstrate how sound is produced by vibrating objects and how sound can be varied by changing.
CHAPTER 12: SOUND Sound is a longitudinal wave. Sound comes from a source, travels in a medium, as longitudinal waves, and is sensed by our ear.
Sound Waves Sound A form of energy that causes molecules of a medium to vibrate back and forth in a series of compressions and rarefactions as a longitudinal.
I. What is Sound? Longitudinal waves or compression waves. Created by vibrations Vibrations are composed of Compression Rarefaction Medium (or media)
INTRODUCING SOUND WAVES Ritchel Dyan Z. Bagayas. The Nature of Sound  Sound travels in waves as it moves through the air or some other medium (substance)
PROPERTIES OF SOUND CHAPTER 2, SECTION 2. Loudness describes your ___PERCEPTION__ of the energy of a sound. The loudness of sound depends on 2 factors:

Chapter 12 Notes

Journal – Read/Summarize pages 390 to 391 What Factors affect the speed of Sound? What affects how loud a sound is?

Sound waves in air spread out in all directions away from the source. Properties of sound Sound waves in air spread out in all directions away from the source. Sound travels through the air at room temperature about 346 m/s (760 mi/h)

Factors that affect Speed of Sound Temperature Type of Medium See chart page 391

What determines how loud or what pitch a sound wave makes? Loudness is determined by the energy in the wave which we see in the amplitude of a wave. The higher the amplitude the more energy and the louder a sound is. Loudness is also determined by distance. http://library.thinkquest.org/19537/Physics3.html http://www.fi.edu/fellows/fellow2/apr99/soundvib.html

What determines the Pitch or tone of a sound? Frequency Natural frequency - when an object vibrates naturally on its own.

How does our ear allow us to hear?
