BTEC Health and Social Care L3 Patterns and Trends in Health and Illness

P3 Using statistics and data in Health and Social Care

Breadline Britain? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkmhBISVmcg

Key terms: Match to definition Prevalence rate The number of people who have died in a population in a year. Incidence rate The number of people who have a particular illness during a given time Morbidity rate The total number of cases of a specific disease in a population at a specific time. Mortality rate The number of new cases of a specific disease in a population at a specific time.

Statistics should be treated with caution Statistical data Always quote where your statistics are from – give the website address Consider ‘who’ published the information. Is there any bias? Where were the statistics published? – a newspaper maybe. But does the paper support a particular political party?......more biased data Statistics should be treated with caution

How are you going to do P3? You will need to explain the different patterns and trends in health and illness in social groupings identified according to factors such as gender, social class, geographical location, ethnicity and age.

What have you got to do for P3? Explain patterns and trends in health and illness among different social groupings

Age Gender/sex Ethnicity Geographic location Social class 5 key social areas Age Gender/sex Ethnicity Geographic location Social class

Choose 5 areas to compare: Life expectancy Risk of cancer Infant mortality Smoking Alcohol use Suicide rates GP appointments Hospital admissions Heart disease Mental health

Structure Social area Health Illness Age Suicide (mortality rates) Smoking (mortality rates) Gender/sex Cancer (prevalence rates) Mental health (prevalence rates) Ethnicity Geographical location Social Class

Use evidence to support your points To illustrate your answers choose 5 of the areas on slide 7 to look at in more detail You will use the key social areas to compare the 5 areas Refer to statistical data from a range of sources to explain the patterns of health and illness. When quoting statistics you must clearly identify and reference reliable and up to date sources of data. Use evidence to support your points

Summary Create a table explaining patterns and trends in health and illness among different social groupings . Use statistics to support your work. Ensure you include a bibliography of websites and WebPages you have used.
