READ YOUR PROCEDURE FOR ANY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN. 3. LISTEN TO ALL INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY YOUR TEACHER REGARDING MATERIALS AND HANDLING OF EQUIPMENT AND CHEMICALS IN THE LAB. 4. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN AND FREE FROM CLUTTER. 5. YOU MUST STAND WHILE DOING LABS. NO SITTING ON THE LAB BENCH. 6. NO UNAUTHORIZED EXPERIMENTATION IS PERMITTED. 7. AVOID SUDDEN OR RAPID MOTION THAT MAY INTERFERE WITH SOMEONE CARRYING OR WORKING WITH CHEMICALS OR SHARP INSTRUMENTS. 12. ABSOLUTELY NO HORSEPLAY WILL BE TOLERATED IN THE LAB G. G. Warner- Acton Math & Science Handling Chemicals If you are unsure about anything in the lab, please ask for assistance. We are here to help you! Check the labels on all chemical bottles twice before removing any of the contents.  Look for Hazardous and WHMIS symbols. Take only the amount of chemicals that you are required to use. Use separate scoopulas for chemicals to avoid contamination. Add chemicals to water, not the reverse. If a chemical splash on your eye(s) or on your skin, flush with running water for 15-20 minutes. Consult MSDS severe cases. Do not return used chemicals to the stock bottle unless instructed by the teacher. G. Warner- Acton Math & Science

G. Warner- Acton Math & Science Handling Glassware Do not use dirty or chipped glassware. 2. Do not tightly stopper a test tube or flask when a gas is created. It could EXPLODE!! 3. Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water. The glassware may shatter. 4. Heated glassware remains very hot for a long time.  They should be set aside in a designated place to cool, and picked up with caution using tongs or gloves. G. Warner- Acton Math & Science

G. Warner -Acton Math & Science Heating Substances Make sure all equipment is secure before heating. Light a Bunsen burner as demonstrated.   Make sure electrical cord is not touching the hot plate. Never leave a heat source unattended. Heat test tubes on an angle away from other students. Never look directly into a container that is being heated. Handle recently heated glassware with tongs. G. G. Warner- Acton Math & Science ACCIDENTS & DISPOSAL Report all accidents and injuries to your teacher at once, no matter how minor. Inform your teacher of any broken equipment or glassware, unidentified chemicals and spills to the teacher immediately. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass.  Place broken glass in the designated glass disposal container, not the garbage! G. Warner- Acton Math & Science CLEAN UP Clean all glassware, put away equipment and wash down lab bench with disinfectant after you are done a lab. Sinks should be clean and not contain any solid material. Wipe the counters clean with disinfectant and paper towels. Wash hands with soap and water after working in the lab. G.
