Aim: How does changing pressure and temperature affect a gas? Do Now: Take out your calculator and reference tables. Explain the difference(s) between Charles’ and Boyle’s Laws.

What happens… To the volume of a gas when pressure is changed? To the volume of a gas when its temperature is changed? To the pressure of a gas when its temperature is changed? Changing the temperature of a gas has similar effects on pressure as it does on volume. This means…

P1V1 P2V2 T1 T2 = The Combined Gas Law Takes pressure, volume, and temperature change formulas and makes them into one formula. This can be written as: P1V1 P2V2 T1 T2 = This formula can be found in Reference Table T. ***Note all calculations are done with the standard temperature (K)***

A Practice Problem If a gas has an initial pressure of 12atm and a volume of 23 liters, and a temperature of 200K, and is changed to 14atm, and 300K, what is the new volume of the gas?

Another Practice Problem A rigid cylinder with a moveable piston contains a 2.0 liter f neon gas at STP. What is the volume of this gas when its temperature is increased to 30°C while its pressure is decreased to 90 kPa?

A Third Practice Problem A piece of magnesium ribbon is reacted with excess HCl(aq) to produce aqueous magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas. The volume of the dry hydrogen gas produced is 45.6 mL. The temperature of the gas is 293K and the pressure is 99.5 kPa. Calculate the volume that the dry H2 gas would occupy at STP.
