Poison vs Venom Poisons are chemicals that can injure or impair body functions. Venoms are substances injected by one species into another. Toxins are mostly described as drugs produced by microorganisms. Venoms and toxins are mostly proteins or polypeptides. Many of toxins and poisons are alkaloids (drugs of plant origin)

History of Poison Poison has been used for over 6,500 years starting with early hunters Favorite method of assassination in Roman Empire In the modern era, intentional poisoning is less common Now seen more often with Russian assassinations

Acute v Chronic Poisoning Acute- the adverse effects of a substance that result either from a single exposure or from multiple exposures in a short period of time Chronic- the long-term repeated or continuous exposure to a poison where symptoms do not occur immediately or after each exposure. The patient gradually becomes ill, or becomes ill after a long latent period

Lead Lead interferes with a variety of body processes and is toxic to many organs and tissues It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is therefore particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders

Mercury Symptoms typically include sensory impairment (vision, hearing, speech), disturbed sensation and a lack of coordination Can be caused by fish ingestion Inhalation extremely dangerous
