Owl Pellet Analysis By: Caitlin Donnelly

Food Web This is the Food Web of the Northwestern Washington Barn Owl. It shows what owls eat, and what those animals eat. The bones of these animals can be found in the owl pellet.

Looking at Owl Pellets Owl pellets are masses of bones, teeth, hair, feathers, scales and insect skeletons. They are produced and regurgitated, not only by owls, but also by hawks, eagles and other raptors who swallow their prey whole or in large pieces.

Breaking Apart the Owl Pellet Everyone was given an owl pellet to break apart and look at the bones. We wore gloves to do this and used Q-tips and paper clips to help remove fur from the bones.

Bones in My Owl Pellet In my owl pellet I found a rodents skull, a shrews skull and jaw, a moles shoulder blade, and some ribs.

Owl Pellet Analysis I thought that this project was disgusting. It was gross to see the animals bones, the hair, and skulls. But, it was neat to figure out what all the bones were.
