Confession Prediction Instruction Luke 9:18-27

Confession Prediction Instruction 18 While he was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" 19 They answered, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back." 20 "But you," he asked them, "who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah.“ 21 But he strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, "It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day." Luke 9:18-27

Confession Prediction Instruction 23 Then he said to them all, "If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it. 25 For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of the Father and the holy angels. 27 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God." Luke 9:18-27

How does Peter know who Jesus really is? Peter’s Confession 18 While he was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" 19 They answered, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back." 20 "But you," he asked them, "who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah.“ Luke 9:18-20 Matt. 16:17  Jesus responded, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven. How does Peter know who Jesus really is?

Where do we get our convictions about Jesus’ true identity? John 16:13-14 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.

Jesus’ Prediction Luke 9:21-22 21 But he strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, "It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day." Luke 9:21-22 Why is this the wrong time for the disciples to publicly proclaim Jesus’ true identity?

What 4 reasons did Jesus give His disciples for remaining silent? Jesus’ Prediction 21 But he strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, "It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day." Luke 9:21-22 What 4 reasons did Jesus give His disciples for remaining silent? ❶ Suffering ❷ Rejection ❸ Death ❹ Resurrection

What three commands does Jesus use to summarize discipleship? The Disciples’ Instruction 23 Then he said to them all, "If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. What three commands does Jesus use to summarize discipleship? Luke 9:23-27 ❶ Deny ❷ Take up ❸ Follow Taken together, what do these three commands imply about discipleship? Jesus makes it clear that the essence of discipleship is self-denial & submission.

What is the meaning of this “lose life to gain life” saying? The Disciples’ Instruction 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it. 25 For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself? Luke 9:23-27 What is the meaning of this “lose life to gain life” saying? If we wish to control our life, then it will be lost because of our refusal to submit to God’s way. Orienting our life toward Jesus is a prerequisite for saving life.

The Disciples’ Instruction 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of the Father and the holy angels. Luke 9:23-27 What social pressures today might cause a believer to hesitate in proclaiming Jesus Christ or living for Him? How can we withstand the critical scrutiny of society and remain true to our commitment to Christ?

What does Jesus mean by this ambiguous phrase? The Disciples’ Instruction 27 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God." What does Jesus mean by this ambiguous phrase? Luke 9:23-27 Various Views: ❶ The Transfiguration ❷ The Resurrection-Ascension ❸ Pentecost ❹ The Second Coming In his orderly account, Luke follows up this passage with the story of the Transfiguration.

What are these indicators measuring? Luke’s CPI Indicator… Confession Prediction Instruction What are these indicators measuring?

Deliberate Discipleship Jesus has begun to prepare the disciples for the end of His earthly ministry and the beginning of the Kingdom. To identify with and follow Jesus means to deny ourselves and submit to God’s ways and His will for our lives. To reject Jesus and His teaching and choose self-sufficiency will lead to ultimate rejection before the Father. In what areas do you need to set aside your desires for self-sufficiency and personal gain and follow Jesus?
