What is soil? What is it made of? What’s in it? Daily Goal: SWBAT define soil diagrams based on composition. What is soil? What is it made of? What’s in it?

The main component of all soils is sediment which are rocks & minerals. Sediments depend on the type of rock from which they form. The type and amount of sediment help determine the type of soil. Examples: sand, clay, humus

Soil is also made up of humus (dead plants and animals), air and water.

That means soil has 4 components: Minerals Humus Air water

There are 12 types of soil depending how much of the soil is made up of minerals, humus, air and water.

The size of the sediments determines the texture of the soil The size of the sediments determines the texture of the soil. In order from smallest sediment size to largest size, we have clay, silt, and sand. Clay Silt Sand

The percentage of silt, sand, and clay determines the texture of the soil. A Soil Diagram will help us figure out what the texture of the soil is based on the percentage of silt, sand, and clay in the soil.

E DO NOW What are the three minerals that make up soil? (list them in order of smallest to largest) What type of soil is made up of 30% sand, 50% clay, 20% silt? What type of soil is made up of 60% sand, 30% clay, 10% silt? What type of soil is made up of 40% silt, 20% clay, 40% sand?
