The Day Everything Changed Matthew 27

Matthew 27:1-2

A Summary of Events When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. Matthew 27:1

A Summary of Events And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Matthew 27:2

A glimpse at the character of the wicked leaders. 3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!” Matthew 27:3-4

A glimpse at the character of the wicked leaders. …And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. Matthew 27:4b-5

Christ’s death...

…a necessity. 1. Israel tried many “gods” through out history. a. None of them saved them. b. None of them provided for them. c. All of them were created by man. 17 Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, 18 and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands—wood and stone. Therefore they destroyed them. 2 Kings 19:17-18

…a necessity. When you have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed down to them, then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and you shall perish quickly from the good land which He has given you.” Joshua 23:16

…a true sacrifice. 1. The things Christ experience were a true sacrifice. a. Many hold up the flag of a martyr when someone looks a them funny. b. Christ humbly and purposely endured such things.

…a true sacrifice. 2. Christ’s sacrifice should be something that is engraved on our hearts and minds. 22 Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”23 Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!” Matthew 27:22-23

…a true sacrifice. Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified. Matthew 27:26

…a true sacrifice. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. Matthew 27:27-31

…a true sacrifice. 35 Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”36 Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. Matthew 27:35-36

Lessons for us today.

We are like Barabbas 17 Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy. Matthew 27:17-18

We are like Barabbas 20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!”22 Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”23 Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!” Matthew 27:20-23

Christ’s death provided a means of rescue for mankind. O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. Jeremiah 10:23

Christ’s death provided a means of rescue for mankind. And I said to him, “Sir, you know.” So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Revelation 7:14 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Revelation 12:11

Conclusion 1. Let us never forget what was done by Christ and why it was necessary. 2. Let us always remember, that we are the reason. For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6
