English II Mrs. Henson’s class

About William Golding 1. He wrote LOTF in 1954 A British teacher, social worker, actor, and novelist. He also served in the British Royal Navy during World War II. 3. Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983 4. Lived 1911-1993

Historical Content 1.Golding was deeply affected by his experience in WW II, where 55 million people died. 2. Due to the development of powerful atomic bombs and nuclear weapons which led to the Cold War following WW II, Golding felt the entire world was in a power struggle that caused people to live in fear. Many people even built fallout shelters as hiding places for another nuclear attack!

Golding’s Philosophy & Purpose Golding had three major beliefs which he wanted to share with readers through this novel: We must understand that we all part of a greater whole; we must not be selfish but rather understand our connection to other people and how we affect each other. We cannot change human nature, we can only attempt to understand it. This way we can suppress our savagery. He described mankind’s inhumanity by writing: “man produces evil, as a bee produces honey.” (that’s a metaphor!)

Philosophy and Purpose con’t As you are reading the novel, think about these themes: 1. People desire social & political order. 2. The military represents our evil, violent nature. 3. The belief in supernatural or divine intervention with destiny.

Core content vocabulary that relates to LOTF: symbolism – a person, place, thing, or event that stands for something beyond itself. irony – a contrast between expectation and reality; between what is said and what is meant; or between what appears to be true and what really is true. allegory – a story in which the characters, events, and setting stand for certain other people, events, or concepts.
