It was originally created as Great Sand Dunes National Park on March 17,1932. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve was established by an act of The United States Congress on September13,2004

The park is 149,137 Acres

Great Sand Dunes National Park is 366,041 acres smaller than Rhode Island.

The park looks like the dessert because it has lots of sand dunes. That is why it is called Great Sand Dunes National Park. Below Is a picture of the dunes.

Tourists visit the park because there are lots of activities. Tourists can enjoy hiking, sliding down the sand dunes, camping, and taking pictures of the dunes.

Kids would like Junior Ranger Day. Each Summer the park hosts a special day with numerous activities for kids, including learning about nature, primitive skills, sand sculpturing, crafts, and more. You can play in the sand, roll or slide down a dune, splash in Medano Creek in spring and early summer, hike in the mountains, see cool interactive exhibits, and earn a Junior Ranger Badge. There are no poisonous animals or insects in the dunes. They are safe for all ages.
