FIGURE 1 Pathogenesis of transfusion-related acute lung injury. The presence of antileukocyte antibodies and/or biologically active lipids from cell membrane fragments in donor blood triggers an inflammatory response, granulocyte activation, and degranulation and injury to the alveolar-capillary membrane. Activated macrophages secrete inflammatory cytokines that further perpetuate the inflammatory reaction.
