Why Evangelise? Mark 2:13-3:6

Week 1- Review Why do we follow Jesus? Mark chapters 1 & 2 show, the reason we follow Jesus is because he alone has the authority to forgive sins.

Why Evangelise? (Jesus calls Levi) Sometimes all it takes is a simple invitation! Vs 14; ‘As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collectors booth. “Follow me”, Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him’. Levi followed, because Jesus afforded him Grace.

Why Evangelise? (Jesus calls Levi…continued) Evangelism is an exclusive call to those who are ‘lost’. Vs 17; On hearing this Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners”. Jesus’ ministry was focused on evangelism! The Gospel was specifically written to spread the good news of Jesus to the Gentiles. Are we, as individual Christians, doing enough evangelism?

Why Evangelise? Evangelism is depended on the concept of abundant grace. Jesus was unassuming and befriended those regarded as ‘sinners’. Jesus understood that God’s grace was available for all to accept. Nothing we have ever done or could possibly do will warrant a relationship with God. Salvation is an undeserved gift given to us because of Gods Grace. Why do we Evangelise? Because God’s Grace extends to everyone.

Rewind… Why do we follow Jesus? Mark illustrates the decaying relationship between Jesus and the Pharisees. Vs 18; Now Johns disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”. Vs 25; “Have you never heard what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?”

Why do we follow Jesus? Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise. He is our eternal sacrifice. He is our mediator, so we can have a relationship with God.

Conclusion! Why Evangelise? Because God’s grace extends to everyone! We have to let our light shine Why follow Jesus? Because he has the authority to forgive sins, but also because he is the fulfillment of God’s promise. And because Jesus is our eternal sacrifice, our mediator, so we can have a everlasting relationship with God.
