A farmer has just cleared a new field for corn A farmer has just cleared a new field for corn. It is a unique plot of land in that a river runs along one side. The corn looks good in some areas of the field but not others. The farmer is not sure that harvesting the field is worth the expense. He has decided to harvest 10 plots and use this information to estimate the total yield. Based on this estimate, he will decide whether to harvest the remaining plots.

Sampling Methods There are many different methods of sampling; name 5 methods we studies early on in this class. Take a moment in your group to list and review all the methods. July 22, 2012 Footer text here

Explain how each method could be used to sample the corn field. Different Methods Explain how each method could be used to sample the corn field. Your explanation has to be complete enough so anyone can follow your directions. Use a different grid for each sampling method and color the sampled area(s). July 22, 2012 Footer text here

Estimate of total Yield Sampling method Average yield Per Plot Estimate of total Yield July 22, 2012 Footer text here

1) You have looked at four different methods of choosing plots 1) You have looked at four different methods of choosing plots. Is there a reason, other than convenience, to choose one method over another? 2) How did your estimates vary according to the different sampling methods you used? 3) Compare your results to someone else in the class. Were your results similar? July 22, 2012 Footer text here

Which sampling method should you use Which sampling method should you use? Why do you think this method is best? What was the actual yield of the farmer’s field? July 22, 2012 Footer text here

Other sampling activities The MODA Center How would you choose a sample? “ How mode of transportation did you use to come here?” July 22, 2012 Footer text here

Other sampling activities Use the map of Grant High School. GHS would like to make sure all the lights in classrooms and offices function properly. Before they order bulbs and other supplies, they would like to know the extent of the repairs. They plan to take a sample of rooms and offices. Then state exactly how you would choose a sample; use the map. July 22, 2012 Footer text here

Some questions to Ponder How would you take a sample to represent all the teacher in PPS? How would you take a sample of all 5o State Capitals? How would you sample the seniors at GHS? July 22, 2012 Footer text here

Optional Create you own sampling problem. Include a full description of the situation. Include any diagrams or pictures necessary. July 22, 2012 Footer text here
