Fusion 360 integrated CAD/CAM for digital manufacturing Engraved sign Engraved sign overview

Learning Objectives After completing this lesson, you will be able to: Explain the course challenge. Access and download the project resources. List the lessons covered in the course. Explain the course sequence and lesson learning objectives. Access the course assignments. Proceed to the next lesson.

Engraved sign Challenge 1 The Job: The Ross Arts Center was once a vibrant visible force in the community, but it has mostly been inactive for the past three years. The staff wants to update their signage as part of a new arts program and brand refresh. They are looking at engraved wood signs to complement a new natural and sustainable design concept. They have contracted you to develop a sign prototype to showcase at their next design review meeting. They also want to know how long it will take to design and manufacture the part. Your goal is to create a 3D model of a sample sign to be cut on a CNC machine to provide a physical prototype.

Engraved sign Challenge 2 Make it your own: Make your own engraved sign. With the CAD/CAM skills you have acquired, apply the digital manufacturing workflow to create your own sign or a sign for a local organization. Explore different fonts, select a graphic, or design your own graphic to create your own customized sign.

Engraved sign Challenge 3 Be an expert: To further your skills, explore the assignment created for this project. It’s a great opportunity to apply and refine your skills and work towards becoming industry certified as an Autodesk Fusion 360™ Certified User.

Course overview The course contains sequential modules: Overview Course prerequisites CAD: Design for manufacturing 2D/3D CAD lecture. CAD step-by-step video tutorials. Sustainability design. CAM: Toolpath generation 2D/3D mill CAM lecture. CAM step-by-step video tutorials. Manufacturing best practice Process plan lecture. Cutting data lecture.

Course overview (continued) CNC: Set-up and operation Haas mill CNC set-up lecture. CNC set-up step by step videos tutorials. First Article Inspection Metrology lecture. Assignment CAD and CAM assignment. Assessment Course assessment.

Overview The engraved sign project is designed to give the students the tools required to model, program, machine, and inspect the part.

Course prerequisites New to Fusion 360? If so, check the following list of prerequisites before you start this course. Once you have completed the prerequisites you can move onto the projects. Download and install Fusion 360. Review the Fusion 360 user interface. Setup Fusion 360 preferences for digital manufacturing. Import the supplied tool library.

CAD: Design for manufacturing 2D/3D Step-by-step videos are supplied for the following topics: Creating sketch geometry to develop 3D features. Creating 3D features. Green materials selection. Developing renderings of the design. Generating 2D drawings. Collaborating with others to review the design.

Sustainable design: Green materials selection Green Materials Basics When considering the environmental properties of materials, look for materials that are abundant, non-toxic, have low embodied energy, and meet or exceed regulations.   You also need to ensure that the material has the right physical properties to get the job done and that it won’t drive up costs.

CAM: Toolpath generation 2D/3D mill Step-by-step videos are supplied to demonstrate the set-up on the CNC mill: Stock setup. Tool library. Toolpaths Engraving Contour Simulating tool paths. Posting NC code.

Manufacturing best practice The following topics are covered in this section: Complete a process plan to manufacture the engraved sign. Calculate spindle RPM for the cutting tools. Calculate cutting-tool feed rate for cutting the part.

CNC: Setup and operation Haas mill The following step-by-step videos will be covered to aid with the setup on the CNC mill: Installing a vise. Indicating a vise. Setting work offsets. Setting height offsets. Loading the sign NC program. Dry running the sign NC program. Running the sign NC program.

First article inspection To enable inspection of the part during the machining process, the following topics are described: Calibrate a digital caliper. Measure the appropriate dimension on the engraved sign project. Fill out the inspection sheet with the measured dimension.

Engraved sign documentation A drawing is supplied in PDF format to support the following design phases. CAD modeling. Part verification after the machining process has occurred.

Assignment Further your skills by completing the supplied assignment. The assignment is outlined in a slide presentation and drawings are provided so you can create the model in the Fusion 360 Model workspace then create the required toolpaths in the CAM workspace. The NC code can be generated and uploaded to a CNC machine in preparation for machining.

Assessment Take the quiz to assess your knowledge of Fusion 360.
