Groundwater: the fresh water that is located beneath Earth’s surface.

Permeable: the ability of a rock or sediments to let fluids pass through its open spaces or pores.

Impermeable: rock that does not allow water to flow through.

Saturated Zone: the area below the Earth’s surface where the pores are completely filled with water

Unsaturated Zone: the portion of the subsurface above the groundwater table. The soil and rock in this zone contains air as well as water in its pores.

Watershed: the area of land that is drained by a river system.

Surface Water: all the bodies of fresh water, salt water, ice, and snow that are found above ground.

Pores: tiny space between rocks and particles of soil.

Aquifer: a body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater.

Water table: the upper surface of underground water; the upper boundary of the zone of saturation.
