Lesson 19 Vocabulary Roots Red Hot Word Parts!!

CONSTRUE (verb)-to explain, translate, or assume the meaning of something Don’t construe what he said to mean that he liked the show.

DEPORT (verb)-to send out of the country (usually a person) The man was deported to his native country by the immigration officials.

DEPORTEE (noun)-someone who is sent out of the country The deportee was not happy about returning to his native country.

DESTRUCTIVE (adj)-causing something to be destroyed or demolished The fire was very destructive, causing a million dollars’ worth of damage.

EXPORT (verb)-to send goods out of one country to another country for the purpose of selling The company’s business doubled once it started exporting its products to other countries.

IMPORT (verb)-to bring goods from a foreign country into a country for the purpose of selling There are many products we import because we cannot grow them in our country.

INSTRUMENTAL (adj)-helpful; useful She was instrumental in getting an agreement among all the companies.

OBSTRUCT (verb)-to block or put obstacles in the way The guard tried to obstruct the center’s attempt to make a basket.

PORTABLE (adj)-capable of being carried He took his portable CD player with him to the beach.

STRUCTURAL (adj)-related to building or construction The earthquake caused structural damage, but no people were hurt.
