Chemistry – Jan 9, 2019 P3 Challenge – Compare Oxygen and Selenium. Which atom has the higher ionization energy? Give two reasons why. One reason should be based on their relative position on the periodic table. The second reason should be based on their atomic structure. Today’s Objective – Periodic Trends

Chemistry – Jan 9, 2019 Objective – Polyatomic Ions Assignment: Polyatomic Ions Memory Assignment Quiz on Monday 1/14 Agenda Questions Periodic Trends Worksheet Student-Student Challenges

Student – Student Challenges Form groups of three students. Groups of 4 also will work. Phase 1: Put your name as the challenger for the first cycle. Complete three challenges by choosing two elements that are in either the same row or column. Choose higher or lower and choose a property for each. Phase 2: Pass your challenge to one of your partners. Put name as Solver. Answer the challenge and give two reasons. One based on position, one based on atomic structure. Phase 3: Pass your solution to the third partner. Put name as Checker. Verify that the solver has the correct answer. Discuss until all three sheets are correct. Repeat the three phases with new challenges.

Exit Slip - Homework Exit Slip: Draw four small periodic table shapes and indicate the trends for 1) atomic size, 2) ionic size, 3) ionization energy and 4) electronegativity by using two arrows on each. What’s Due? (Pending assignments to complete.) Mp4 of Polyatomic Ions Memory Lesson (Quiz on Monday 1/14) Periodic Trends WS if not yet completed due Monday What’s Next? (How to prepare for the next day) Read p159-175 about ions and Ionic bonding
