Potential and Kinetic Energy

Energy is the ability to make something happen What is Energy? Energy is the ability to make something happen Move something Heat something Physically change something Light something

Types of Energy: Motion energy Heat energy Electrical energy Light energy Sound

Kinetic Energy Potential Energy Categories of Energy: Energy of motion Stored energy

Categories of Energy: Kinetic Energy Potential Energy Moving car Flying rubber band Fire A car up on a hill Stretched rubber band Gasoline

Units of Energy Energy is measured in Joules Joules  J Ex - 150 J

Potential Energy

150 J of PE  150 J of KE Kinetic Energy

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed Energy can only change forms Example: Potential Energy stored in= Amount of Kinetic Energy released

Law of Conservation of Energy Example: Potential Energy stored in gasoline is turned into Kinetic Energy by a car’s engine to get it up a hill The car then has Potential Energy because it is up high. When the car rolls down the hill, its Potential Energy is turned back into Kinetic Energy as it begins to move

PE stored in in the car turns back to KE as it rolls down the hill PE stored is stored in the car because it is at the top of the hill PE stored in gasoline is changed into KE by the car’s engine to get it up the hill

Potential energy stored in a car up on a hill

Kinetic energy of the car rolling down the hill

Potential energy of a stretched rubber band

Kinetic energy of the launched projectile

Potential energy of the chemicals in a match

Kinetic energy of a hot flame
