What is a wave? A repeating disturbance or movement that transfers energy through matter OR space

Examples of Waves Ocean Waves Earthquakes Light

Waves and Energy Waves are caused by a transfer of energy

Waves and Energy Example Pebble falling into a still pool of water. Pebble transfers energy water molecules other water molecules

Waves and Matter Waves can carry energy without transporting matter from place to place. Example: Boat passing another boat on the river.

Waves Only travel as long as they have energy * Produced by vibrations

Mechanical Waves Travel only through a medium Medium- matter a wave travels through Examples: Solid, liquid, gas, or a combo of them

Types of Mechanical Waves Transverse Waves Matter in medium moves back and forth @ right angles to wave’s direction. Examples: Ocean Waves You shaking a rope

Types of Mechanical Waves 2. Compressional Waves Matter in medium moves along same direction wave travels. Example: Squeezing and releasing the coils in a spring.
