Section 3 Cellular Respiration Part 1 - Overview Chapter 8 Section 3 Cellular Respiration Part 1 - Overview

THE BIG PICTURE Past - Photosynthesis converts the Sun’s energy in chemical potential energy of food. Present – Cellular Respiration converts the chemical potential energy stored in food to the chemical potential energy stored in ATP. Future – ATP supplies the energy to do cell work.

MAIN Idea Living organisms obtain energy by breaking down GLUCOSE during cellular respiration

Overview of Cellular Respiration The point of cellular respiration is to harvest chemical energy from food (such as Glucose) and store it in the chemical bonds of ATP (which provides energy for cellular work) The equation for cellular respiration is the opposite of the equation for PHOTOSYNTHESIS.

Overview of Cellular Respiration Cellular respiration occurs in two main parts.

2 Main Part of Cellular Respiration The first stage, GLYCOLYSIS, is an anaerobic process Anaerobic processes do not require OXYGEN The second stage, AEROBIC RESPIRATION, is an aerobic process Aerobic processes require OXYGEN This stage includes the Krebs cycle and electron transport
