What are the costs of unemployment? “It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose your own.” – Harry Truman What are the costs of unemployment? Costs: Loss of paycheck, loss of self-esteem, stress, crime, suicide, mental illness, loss of output.

Answer 2 Not completely true! Individuals are unemployed if they: Do not have a job. Have looked for a job in the past 4 weeks. To be considered part of the labor force, you must be working or looking for a job.

Summary Adult Population: Everyone 16 years old or older and who is not in the military, not in jail or prison, not living permanently in nursing homes, and not in other “institutions.” Labor Force: The total number of adults who are either employed OR unemployed. Employed: The number of adults who are working. Unemployed: The number of adults who are not working but are actively seeking work.
