Freud’s Timeline (1856 -1861) 1856 - Born May 6th, 1856 First child of father’s second marriage Weird family situation, Freud was born an uncle 7 siblings in the family 1861 - moved to Vienna at 5 years old Lived there until he moved to London in 1938 Family was Jewish, very religious 1873 - enters the Vienna Medical School Starts school at the age of 17 years old Stays and works at the medical school He was a very high achiever, wanted to be known, famous

Freud Timeline (1873 - 1886) 1873-1886 – VIENNA MEDICAL SCHOOL Works for Dr. Breuer – a biological researcher Created method of staining cells to see under microscope Strains come from: Split between experimental research and clinical research Freud falls in love with... Martha Bernays – needs money to wed.

Freud Timeline (1885) 1885 – recognized the amazing ability of the mind, went back to Vienna and created his own theory “psychoanalysis.” 1895 – starts to actually practice his theory, psychoanalysis – becomes his life’s work. 1899 – Writes the book, “the Interpretation of Dreams.” Well respected following of the book, but not a big seller, doesn’t make much money for Freud. Not a lot of people willing to read it because he was a Jew.

Freud Timeline (1923 – 1939) 1923 – Gets cancer of the jaw Smokes 20 Cuban cigars a day Has 33 operations on his jaw Knows smoking is bad, but will not give it up. 1938 – Nazi’s burn his books in the streets of Vienna, make a deal with Freud Freud is allowed to move to London Most other family members die in concentration camps Lives in London for one year 1939 – Freud dies of Cancer of the Jaw (September 23)

Freud’s Life Events Freud’s most famous patient – “Anna O.” She had issues with hysteria, she lost function to do things for no reason Freud connects Anna’s past with issues of hysteria. Vision clears up due to reliving past issues. Issue is dealing with death of her father. Catharsis: pent up energy is let go and the symptom goes away. Free Association is the therapy that is used for this process
