Welcome to World History 7A!

Ways to Be Successful Manage your time by using the PACING GUIDE in the front of your workbook Helps you PLAN for what you need to complete each day Read everything CAREFULLY textbook, directions, activity questions Use the class website’s RESOURCES youtube videos/tutorials, materials for extra support Ask your teacher for HELP when you don’t understand a concept or an activity when you need help with your performance tasks when you don’t have access to a printer or to a computer with internet connection

How Long Should Each Unit Take? As each unit is split up into 5 or 6 lessons… Which lesson? What is the lesson on? Suggested time to complete FIRST lesson Introduction; very short Half a day MIDDLE lessons Content lessons; where most of the learning is done 1 lesson = 1 day AM = 3 activities PM = 2 activities LAST lesson Performance tasks: graded assignments, more time consuming 1 lesson = 3 days A 5-lesson Unit = roughly 7 days = almost 3 units a month A 6-lesson Unit = roughly 8 days = at least 2 units a month

What are the Performance Tasks? Graded assignments that require: Knowledge of everything you’ve learned in the unit Demonstration of that knowledge through various “tasks” Tasks may include (but not limited to): Answering short questions Developing and writing an essay Researching on the internet Creating a visual project Presenting your project to your teacher/class Whenever you see this icon, it means this activity assignment is GRADED!!

Types of Essays You’ll See Argumentative A specific topic is given Use sources to form and support your argument Ex. Were the “Dark Ages” really “dark”? Informative Compare and Contrast Explains the similarities and differences between two topics Ex. What made the Byzantine Empire uniquely different than the Roman Empire? Problem/Solution Presents a problem and researching/finding solutions Ex. How can the understanding of Islam decrease islamophobia in our country? Cause and Effect Explains why something happens/happened Ex. Why did the bubonic plague affect the political, economic, and social structures of medieval Europe? Process essay Explains how something happens/happened Ex. How did the trans-Saharan trade lead to Ghana’s wealth and success?
