TSCATS Complete™ is a powerful resource providing access to ALL ~29,000 unpublished, non-confidential chemical testing result submissions to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency under several sections of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Covering a multitude of chemicals, it provides the most comprehensive compilation of TSCA Test Submissions anywhere. In this tutorial, we will look at how to search TSCATS Complete using several search tips, including those for simple term searches, phrase searches, connector searches, group searches, term starts-with searches, and combination searches.

Simple Term Search: To search for a specific term, simply enter the term into the Search Term search box. For example, to search for the term benzene, enter benzene and click Submit.

Simple Term Search: The search will return documents in which the selected field contains the term benzene.

Simple Term Search: To search for more than one term, simply enter the terms in the Search Term search box, separated by a space. By default, the connector between terms is "or". For example, to search for documents in which the selected field contains the term benzene OR the term phenol, simply enter: benzene phenol, and click Submit.

Simple Term Search: The search will return documents in which the selected field contains the term benzene or formaldehyde.

Phrase Search: To search a phrase such as "methyl tert-butyl ether", simply enter the phrase into the Search Term text box surrounded by quotation marks, and click Submit.

Phrase Search: The search will return documents in which the selected field contains the phrase “methyl tert-butyl ether”.

Connector Search: By default, the connector separating search terms is "or". To search for documents that contain all entered terms, connect the terms with the word "and". For example, to search for documents in which the selected field contains benzene AND toluene, simply enter: benzene and toluene into the Search Term text box and click Submit. The available connectors are: and, or, not.

Connector Search: The search will return documents in which the selected field contains benzene and toluene.

Group Search: Multiple search terms or clauses can be grouped together with parentheses. For example, to search for documents in which the selected field contains phenol OR benzene and the term formaldehyde, simply enter: (phenol or benzene) and formaldehyde into the Search Term text box and click Submit.

Group Search: The search will return documents in which the selected field contains the term phenol or benzene and the term formaldehyde.

Term Starts-With Search: To search for terms that start with specific characters, use an asterisk after the set of characters. For example, to search for documents in which the selected field has a term that starts with benz, simply enter benz* into the Search Term text box and click Submit. The search will fail if an asterisk precedes characters (*benz) or appears between characters (ben*z).

Term Starts-With Search: The search will return documents in which the selected field contains a term that starts with benz*.

Combination Search: A search query can be created using a combination of the various search types. For example, to search for documents in which the selected field contains a term that starts with benz OR contains the term formaldehyde AND contains the term phenol, simply enter: (benz* or formaldehyde) and phenol into the Search Term text box and click Submit.

Combination Search: The search will return documents in which the selected field contains a term that starts with benz or contains the term formaldehyde and contains the term phenol.
