Red Blood Cell Transfusion Is Associated With Troponin Release After Elective Off- Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery  Fausto Biancari, MD, PhD, Eeva-Maija Kinnunen, MS  The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  Volume 94, Issue 6, Pages 1901-1907 (December 2012) DOI: 10.1016/j.athoracsur.2012.05.032 Copyright © 2012 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

Fig 1 Scatter plot showing a significant correlation between troponin I levels on the first postoperative day (shown in logarithmic scale) and the number of red blood cell (RBC) units transfused (rho: 0.188, p = 0.026). Lines are cubic fit line and 95% confidence interval. Fig 2 Troponin I release after off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery in 58 patients who did and in 82 patients who did not receive red blood cell transfusion (repeated-measure test: p = 0.014). Differences between study groups were significant also at each postoperative (postop) time interval (Mann-Whitney test: p = 0.026, p = 0.012, and p = 0.004, respectively).
