What? I will understand the sense of place that the writer conveys in the poem ‘Island Man’. I will learn the term ENJAMBMENT. I will be able to identify the language features used by the poet to evoke a sense of place in the poem. I will understand how the speaker in ‘Island Man’ feels about his cultural identity.

Why? To help me understand what makes me who I am. To gain a full understanding of how writers show us emotions in poetry.

How are these expressed? What place does the man like best? How many years do you think that he has been gone from the island? What does this tell us about his feelings for where he was born? Where does he identify with most? This is his CULTURAL IDENTITY! What I do with my groups, if its any help, is I give them 1 minute to discuss the first question in pairs, then one minute to discuss the question as a group and come up with the best answer. You could do this – just time it on your watch. It ensures that you’ve managed complete discussion for all students
